The Santrash Nirmul Twaki Mancha formed a ‘boat-chain’ on the Shitalakkha River in a novel move to push its campaign seeking capital punishment for the killers a Naranyanganj school student.
The Mancha, an amalgam of socio-cultural activists seeking justice, thought of this means of protest to mark the six months of the murder.
A temporary platform was erected on a motorised trawler, standing amidst a row of boats on the river.
Hundreds of people took part in the campaign, holding banners, festoons and musical instrument to voice their support for the demand.
Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy, Convener of the organisation Rafiur Rabbi, and Member Secretary Halim Azad were among the speakers.
Ivy said, “Twaki was murdered at Azmeri Osman’s office following Shamim Osman’s directives. The people of Narayanganj have now risen to demand to demand trial for his killers.”
She alleged Nasim Osman was threatening them for speaking against her in a meeting with law enforcers.
Narayanganj’s cultural activist Rafiur Rabbi’s son Tanvir Ahmed Twaki went missing on Mar 6. His body was recovered from the Shitalakkha River two days later. Rabbi filed a case the same night over his son’s death.
Rabbi claimed his son had been ‘tortured and killed’ at Azmeri Osman’s office. He had alleged other businessmen were brought to the ‘torture cell’ and a large sum was taken as ransom from them.
