Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, china Liu Zhenmin is likely to arrive here on Thursday on a two-day tour of Bangladesh to discuss various bilateral and political issues.

“Though the Chinese side has proposed the visit for December 26-27, the schedule could be changed,” an official at the Foreign Ministry told UNB on Sunday.

He said the key bilateral meeting will be held with Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque apart from his engagement with political leaderships.

Liu Zhenmin, who oversees Asia, treaty and law, and boundary and ocean affairs, will also have meetings with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and opposition leader and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia during his visit.

However, the schedule of the meetings is yet to be finalized as there are still possibilities of changes in the schedule of Liu Zhenmin’s visit.

Issues related to the proposed Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Economic Corridor are likely to be discussed at the bilateral meeting between Bangladesh Foreign Secretary and Chine Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, sources at the Foreign Ministry said.

Earlier, Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar agreed on a joint research programme on an ‘Economic Corridor’ connecting the four Eastern South Asian countries, officially setting up the mechanism to promote cooperation among the four nations.

The agreement came from the first meeting of the joint working group on the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Economic Corridor, which was ‘successfully’ held on December 18 and 19 in Kunming.

The next meeting of the joint working group is likely to be held in Dhaka in June next.
