BB seeks security for banks as terror attacks escalate

 

Amid the escalating terror attacks and violence, Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Sunday wrote to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hassan Mahmood Khandker seeking adequate security measures for the head offices and branches of all banks now operating countrywide.

 

“The central bank has requested the IGP to tighten security measures with additional deployment of police for the head offices of all banks and their branches countrywide for ensuring smooth and safe banking operation,” BB General Manager AFM Asaduzzaman told UNB.

 

He said there have been incidents of attacks, vandalism and arson acts in banks following the ongoing instability and sabotage in recent times. “Such incidents are very risky for banks.”

 

Asaduzzaman said the central bank felt that security measures should have been tightened to protect bank establishments and ensure smooth banking operation.

 

He also said the violence is on one hand creating barriers to smooth banking operation and services for the clients and businesspeople it is making bank officials and employees worried on the other hand. “So, security measures need to be tightened.”
