Elections to JS reserved seats April 3

 

The election to 50 parliamentary seats, set aside exclusively for women, will be held on April 3 instead of March 29, said the Election Commission on Tuesday.

 

According to the reschedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is March 9, while that for the scrutiny of nomination papers March 11 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature March 18.

 

Earlier, on Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the election schedule for the 50 parliamentary seats fixing the voting date for March 29.

 

As per the first schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers was March 4, while that for the scrutiny of nomination papers March 6 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature March 12.

 

Out of the 50 seats, the ruling Awami League-led six-party alliance will contest the polls in 41 seats, while Jatiya Party in six and the coalition of independent candidates in three seats.

 

According to rules, the number of reserved seats is allocated among the political parties and the alliance as per the proportion of their representation to parliament.

 

Out of the 300 parliamentary seats, three – Jessore-1 and 2 and Tangail-8 – this time remain vacant following the January 5 parliamentary polls.

 

AL has recently forged the six-party parliamentary alliance and submitted a list of their 248 MPs to the commission to contest the election as a coalition.

 

In the 10th parliament, ruling AL-led alliance has representation of 248 MPs – AL 232, Workers’ Party 6, Jasad 5, Anwar Hossain Monzu-led Jatiya Party-JP 2, Tarikat Fedaration 2 and BNF 1 – while Jatiya Party has 34 MPs, and the rest 15 are independent ones.
