Barguna-2 by-polls: Shawkat Hachanur Rahman gets AL ticket

 

Awami League on Tuesday picked Patharghata upazila chairman Shawkat Hachanur Rahman Rimon as its candidate for the Barguna-2 by-election slated for October 3.

The nomination was finalised at the adjourned meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) held at the Prime Minister’s official residence Ganobhaban in the evening.

ALPB Chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting.

AL deputy office secretary Mrinal Kanti Das said ALPB selected Rimon as the party candidate after interviewing all the 16 aspirants of the party ticket and a detailed discussion.

The Barguna-2 parliamentary seat fell vacant as Awami League lawmaker Golam Sabur Tulu was killed in a tragic road accident on Dhaka-Barisal Highway in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur on July 26.

As per the election schedule, the last date for submission of nomination papers is September 5 and scrutiny of the papers September 7, while the last date for withdrawal of nomination is September 15.

The constituency, comprising three upazilas, has a total of 2,31,003 voters. Barisal regional election officer Mostafa Faruk will work as the returning officer in the by-polls.
