BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam on Saturday said the ruling party will not be able to resist its debacle with its ‘new commander’ as he has no link with the country and its people.
“They (Awami League) have now brought in a new commander so that he can ensure the party’s victory with his election war strategy and wisdom. But it’s a bitter truth that when the fall starts it can’t be resisted, especially under a commander who has no link with the country and its people,” he told a discussion.
Apparently pointing at Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who came to spotlight for his recent political remarks and presence in political programmes, Fakhrul said Awami League employed a new commander after its miserable defeats in the elections to five city corporations and the loss of their second stronghold Gazipur.
Nagorik Odhikar Rakhkha Committee arranged the discussion, titled ‘Illegal remand of Mahmudur Rahman and civic right’ at the Jatiya Press Club.
Fakhrul said the government has destroyed the country with its misrule and taken all measures to annihilate democracy.
Mentioning that Awami League had established one-party rule Baksal in 1975, the BNP leader said the party is now conspiring to reestablish Baksal in a different style.
“The country is passing through a critical time. At this bad time, we all have to create a united resistance. There should be no more division as a national unity is very important now to save the country and its people,” he said.
Fakhrul alleged that daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman is the worst victim of this government’s repression. “When people are oppressed they go to court, but Mahmudur Rahman did not get justice from the court.”
Chaired by Convener of Nagorik Odhikar Rakkha Jatiya Committee (National Committee on Protection of Citizens’ Rights) Farhad Mazhar, the programme was addressed by, among others, noted jurist Barrister Rafiqul Haque, filmmaker Chashi Nazrul Islam, senior journalists Ruhul Amin Gazi and Shawkat Mahmud and Syed Abdal Ahmed.
