BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the people should not blame only the caretaker government for depoliticising the other political parties, but the Awami League also.
“Now the Awami League is also out to depoliticise the others. They are not letting the other political parties to do their job, rather they are eliminating them and insulting their leaders,” he said.
“These leaders are being implicated in false charges,” he added.
The BNP leader was speaking to reporters at his home in Uttara on Friday.
According to him, the Awami League has become so ‘politically bankrupt’ that it has to depend on law-enforcing agencies even after being one of the oldest political parties.
He said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had 29 ‘false cases’ against her.
“You (Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina) have lodged hundreds of cases against our leaders. Which one of those has been started on genuine charges?” he asked.
Mirza Fakhrul said the ‘crisis’ can be overcome only through ‘an election contested and accepted by all’.
“We want an election – this is what we demand,” he said.
He also pressed for talks on the next election to make it acceptable to all.
