Two factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), rival supporters of the current and former mayors, have clashed for the second day over control of Chittagong College.
At least seven persons, including a journalist, were injured in the clashes on Sunday, police said.
Two of the injured received bullet injuries.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Abdur Rahim said the two BCL factions were engaged in clashes for around an hour from 1:30pm.
“One of the factions took shelter on the campus while the other took position outside after being chased by the police,” he said.
Following decades of dominance by the Islami Chhatra Shibir, the BCL faction, known as followers of former mayor and city Awami League chief ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, took control of the college last year.
On Saturday, they prevented the followers of incumbent Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin from entering the campus for a programme related to welcoming admission seekers to the university. The two factions soon found themselves in a running battle with each other.
Students have said Sunday’s clash erupted when tension reached a peak.
According to witnesses, the followers of Uddin started vandalising the structures next to the main gate at noon on Sunday.
Clashes began when Chowdhury’s followers chased them.
Several witnesses said they had heard shots being fired during the clashes.
