Local MP Abdul Wadud Dara’s car has been vandalised and several others injured in a clash between two factions of ruling Awami League in Rajshahi.
Police said the clash erupted when Awami League’s district unit leader Abdul Majid was prevented from joining an extended meeting of Joynagar union council unit ahead of Union Parishad election on Saturday.
Witnesses said Joynagar unit leaders pushed Majid out of stage when he tried to get on it.
The ruling party’s Joynagar unit leaders said they prevented Majid, a former chairman of Durgapur Upazila Parishad and the Joynagar Union Parishad, as he was not invited to the meeting.
Awami League’s Durgapur Upazila unit President Nazrul Islam and Durgapur Municipality Mayor Tofazzal Hossain were also present at the meeting.
Durgapur Police Station OC Parimal Kumar Chakrabarty said police brought the situation under control and additional personnel were deployed to avoid any untoward incident.
Dara alleged Majid attacked the meeting ‘without any provocation’.
He said legal and organisational action would be taken against him.
Of the injured, six were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and five to Upazila Health Complex.
