Observing that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is not a leader of Awami League alone, its general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Wednesday said they want the whole nation to observe the National Mourning Day.
“Bangabandhu is not a leader of Awami League only but also a leader of the nation. Bangabandhu can’t be father of the nation if we (AL) keep him limited to a circle. For the reason, we want not only a party, but also the entire nation to observe the National Mourning Day,” he said.
Syed Ashraf, also Public Administration Minister, was addressing a discussion organised by Peshajibi Samannoy Parishad on the Supreme Court premises marking the National Mourning Day.
About the celebration of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s birthday on August 15, the ruling party leader said, “I requested her to celebrate the birthday either before or after the National Mourning Day. She partially accepted my request as she cut the birthday cake in the afternoon instead of early hours. Perhaps she would keep the request in the future too.”
Dhaka University Vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique and Awami League presidium member Sahara Khatun, among others, addressed the programme with AFM Mesbahuddin in the chair.
