The Detective Brunch (DB) of police on Tuesday submitted another chargesheet against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and 37 others in a case filed over the Jatrabari arson attack on a bus during the BNP-led 20-party’s blockade on January 23.
DB Sub-inspector M Jahidul Islam submitted the chargesheet to the Metropolitan Magistrate Court’s (CMM) in the case filed under the Special Powers Act in connection with the incident.
The other accused include BNP joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Dhaka City BNP member secretary Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel, Khaleda’s special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, BNP central leaders Azizul Bari Helal, Sultan Salauddin Tuku and Swechchhasebak Dal secretary Sharafatullah Safu.
Earlier, on May 6, DB police pressed murder charges against the same accused in the case filed over the attack that killed one person and injured 28 others.
On January 23, at least 29 people suffered burn injuries after miscreants hurled two petrol bombs at a Glory Paribahan bus at Katherpul of Jatrabari around 9.30pm on its way to Rupganj from Gulistan. One of the injured later died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
Sub-inspector of Jatrabari Police Station KM Nuruzzaman filed the two cases — one for killing and the other for hurling petrol bombs— under the Special Powers Act on January 24, making Khaleda the mastermind of the incident.
According to the case statements, the BNP chairperson on January 5 called the countrywide non-stop blockade and asked her leaders and activists to paralyse the country until the government was ousted. Following her directives, her party men torched the bus.
However, a Dhaka court on Wednesday rejected both the bail and remand prayers of BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three cases filed with city’s Paltan Police Station for arson attack, vandalism and obstructing police in performing duties.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ashok Kumar Datta passed the orders after hearing three separate remand petitions submitted by two investigation officers of the cases.
The court also asked the investigation officers to interrogate Fakhrul at jail gate by May 23 in the cases.
Fakhrul’s lawyer Masud Ahmed Talukder filed the bail petitions in three cases at the court while police sought remand of 30 days – 10 days in each case.
Shafiqul Islam and Morshed Alam, sub-inspectors of Paltan Police Station and investigation officers of the cases, on Wednesday produced the BNP leader before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, Dhaka.
They showed him arrested in the three cases filed with the city’s Paltan Police Station for sabotage, including arson attack and vandalism.

Meanwhile, the High Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail for four weeks to former BNP MP Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia, BNP central organizing secretary and former Barisal city mayor Mujibur Rahman Sarwar and secretary of Gazipur district unit Swechchashebak Dal Advocate Nazrul Islam in several cases.
An HC bench comprising Justice Rezaul Hoque and Justice Muhammad Khasruzzaman passed the order following two separate petitions filed by the lawyers of the accused.
BNP central organizing secretary and former mayor of Barisal City Corporation (BCC) Mujibur Rahman Sarwar was accused for trying to set fire on vehicles in two cases filed with Kawnia Police Station and Sadar Model Police Station on January 19 and January 24 respectively.
Seven cases were filed against former BNP MP Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia at different police stations in the capital, on charge of carrying out subversive activities during hartal and blockade programme of the 20-party alliance.
Advocate Nazrul Islam, secretary of Gazipur district unit Swechchashebak Dal, secured the bail in three cases filed with Joydevpur Police Station.
