Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president ASM Abdur Rab on Wednesday alleged that Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna has been arrested in order to stop the rise of a third democratic force in the country.
“We wanted a politics devoid of hartal, blockade, arson, abduction and crossfire. Manna has been arrested so that this dream does not come into reality. The case filed against him will be proven wrong,” he said.
“Manna is a rising national leader. I brought him to Dhaka from Chittagong. We were working to form a different democratic power,” Rab added.
He said this while addressing a Nagarik Oikya discussion in the National Press Club.
Zafrullah Chowdhury, founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra, said Bangladesh was a happy nation in the past, but now it is listed as a country of unhappiness.
“The nation is suffering from numbness now. We cannot protest anything, facing sedition cases for every word,” Zafrullah Chowdhury said.
Speakers at the discussion demanded immediate release of its convener Manna and vowed to canvas for their leader, who is a mayoral candidate in the Dhaka City Corporation (North) polls.
