Bangladesh elected to the UN Human Rights Council

The 47-nation UN Human Rights Council’s elections were held in New York on Tuesday.

Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali in his immediate reaction told bdnews24.com that “this win again proves that Bangladesh is absolutely on the right track under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina”.

Bangladesh has “vigorously” been campaigning for the seat since it is the human rights issues for which Western countries, particularly the US, often criticises the country.

Bangladesh was competing in the Asia group in which four seats were up for grabs. The other countries were India, Indonesia, Qatar and Thailand.

India secured the highest number of votes in the group followed by Indonesia. Bangladesh bagged the third highest votes in the group while Thailand was eliminated.
