Leader of Narayanganj civil society movement Rafiur Rabbi has been attacked in the city.
Rabbi, convener of Santras Nirmul Twaki Mancha, alleged that he was attacked in Charargop area on Friday afternoon in presence of police while he was distributing handbills of his organisation.
Ten others, including Sammilita Sangskritik Jote’s Narayanganj chapter president Prodip Ghosh Babu, Arif Bulbul, Monir Hossain, Amal Akash, Zahangir Alam and Anwar Hossain, were also injured in the attack.
Babu said they were leafleting handbills of Twaki Mancha in different areas in the city including Amlapara, Kalirbazar and Swarnapatti in the afternoon when they were attacked.
“Sadar Model Police Station second officer SI Mizan took a leaflet that time. As we went to Chararbagh area after distributing leaflets at Kalirbazar, SI Mizan intercepted us,” he said.
Babu said with the police there were some leaders and activists of the Jatiya Party. They engaged in a heated argument with the Twaki Mancha people.
He said Jatiya Party’s Narayanganj chapter member secretary Akram Ali Shahin arrived there along with 20-30 leaders and activists after sometime.
“Jatiya Party leaders and activists launched attack on Twaki Mancha convenor Rabbi and his colleagues in presence of him (Shahin) and police,” he added.
When asked, Shahin told bdnews24.com that Twaki Mancha activists were distributing ‘controversial’ leaflets following the announcement of schedule for Narayanganj-5 by-polls slated for June 26.
“While distributing the leaflets, they’re telling (the people), don’t cast votes for killer Osman family,” he said.
Shahin filed a general diary with police on Thursday over the matter.
SI Mizan denied attacks on Twaki Mancha leaders and activists. He said there were arguments between the two parties but no ‘untoward’ incident happened.
Rabbi told reporters after the attacks: “The incident has proved that noone is safe in their (Osman family) hand.
He said he did not file any case over the incident.
