Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reached Rangpur to inaugurate several new projects including the Wazed Mia bridge.
Her son, daughter, their spouses and grandchildren are accompanying her.
Hasina’s son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy is taking his wife Kristine Overmire to visit his ancestral home, for the first time after marriage.
Hasina’s in-law’s house, Mia Bari situated at Peerganj’s Fatehpur, has been decorated and tight security has been put in place ahead of the visit.
The helicopter carrying the Prime Minister and her family members landed around 12:30pm at a temporary helipad near Mia Bari.
Her entourage went home to Mia Bari in a motorcade.
Rangpur-3 constituency Awami League MP Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury told bdnews24.com Hasina will meet relatives and visit her husband’s grave after resting for a while.
Awami League President Hasina is expected to speak at a rally of her party’s local unit at the Peerganj Government High School after 2pm.
Joy is expected to address the rally as special guest, according to local party leaders.
Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Farid Ahmmed said she would open Wazed Mia Bridge on the Korotoa River, the Zilla Parishad bungalow, and the regional passport office, and lay foundation stone of several development projects from the rally.
Hasina was elected from the Rangpur-6 constituency in 2008. This is her third visit to Peerganj during her current term as the Prime Minister.
On Sept 20 last year, she inaugurated the Teesta bridge in Rangpur’s Kawnia.
Local party leaders said the Prime Minister had made 26 commitments on her first visit on Jan 8, 2011. Four of which had been fully implemented while two others are being implemented.
They said they would ask their leader to fulfil other commitments ahead of the national elections.
Tight security had been put in place ahead of the visit with deployment of around 2,500 police, RAB and special security force members.
