National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam today alleged that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China had produced no commitment on either the Teesta Mega Project or the repatriation of Rohingya refugees.
Addressing a divisional rally of the 11-party opposition alliance at Rangpur Zila School ground, he said, “The achievements of the China visit are zero.”
Nahid also accused the government of failing to address the economy, law and order, employment and reforms, and alleged that Rangpur had been deprived of major development projects in the national budget because of its strong opposition presence.
He announced that the alliance would soon launch a fresh movement demanding implementation of the referendum verdict, the July Charter and other reform proposals.
Speaking at the same rally, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman alleged that his party and its allies were being pressured to abandon their demand for implementing the referendum verdict, but vowed they would not retreat “an inch” and would continue their movement until it was enforced.
He said the alliance would continue its movement and, “if necessary”, compel the government to implement the referendum verdict.
Criticising the government over the Teesta issue, Shafiqur alleged that despite repeated promises before the election, no allocation had been made for the Teesta Mega Project in the national budget.
“We no longer want rhetoric. We want concrete action. If the current government fails, and the 11-party alliance forms the next government through the people’s mandate, we will implement the Teesta Mega Project,” he said.
Referring to border killings and alleged push-in attempts by Indian authorities, he claimed that although tensions had increased along the border due to India’s actions, the government had remained silent.
