14-party human chain in dists Mar 9, Dhaka Mar 11: Awami League 14 Party Coalition

The Awami League-led 14-party ruling coalition on Monday announced fresh programmes, including formation of human chain across the capital city Dhaka early next month to mobilise public support for speedy trial of the 1971 war crimes perpetrators.

Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif made the announcement after an emergency meeting of the coalition at the party president’s Dhanmondi office.
Dhaka’s human chain is planned for March 11, a day ahead of the opposition-designed gathering in the capital demanding revival of caretaker administration system to oversee the next general election.
Presided over by coordinator of the 14-party alliance, Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, the meeting decided to form human chain at all district headquarters on March 9.
The alliance will hold rally in Khulna on March 23, said the AL leader adding that the dates for the rallies at divisional headquarters– Sylhet, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Barisal and Chittagong– will be decided later.
“Our programmes will continue until the trial of the perpetrators of the crimes against humanity, committed during our liberation war, is completed,” Hanif said.
The meeting was attended, among others, by Railway Minister Suranjit Sengupta, AL presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Rashed Khan Menon of Workers Party of Bangladesh, Hasanul Haq Inu of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and Dilip Barua of Samybadi Dal.
Against the backdrop of vandalism allegedly done by the opposition activists in December to foil the war crimes trial, the ruling coalition had decided to drum up public support for the speedy trial of the local collaborators of Pakistani forces responsible for killing of 3 million civilians, raping of over 200,000 women and torching of numerous homesteads during Bangladesh’s nine month-long liberation war.
Eight suspected war criminals were arrested by the investigators and trial of some of them has already started. The ruling alliance has been holding rallies, public procession, forming human chains and organizing other programmes to mobilise public mind for the trial for the war crimes– one of the 2008 election promises of the Awami League– since December last year.
The meeting expressed shock at the death of noted writer, journalist and cultural activist Foyez Ahmed. The leaders stood in solemn silence for a minute as a mark of respect to the deceased journalist.
