Zafrullah, Mahfuzullah relieved of contempt charges

Sept 18, 2013 talk-show ‘Muktobaak’ prohibited

The International Crimes Tribunal -1 on Thursday disposed of the contempt of court case relieving Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury of Ganashasthaya and journalist Mahfuzullah of the charges with some strictures.

The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice M Enayetur Rahim, passed the order on the contempt case filed by the prosecution.

The tribunal also prohibited the impugned episode of the talk-show, ‘Muktobaak’, aired by Channel 24, a private satellite TV network on September 18, 2013 over the transparency of the 1971 war crimes trial, referring to the case of now condemned convict BNP stalwart Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

“But the talk-show, titled ‘Muktobaak’, will continue as usual,” said the tribunal. The details of the tribunal order were not available immediately.

‘Muktabaak’ talk-show panelists Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury and journalist Mahfuzullah appeared in person as respondents in compliance with the tribunal order.

Responding to a prosecution plea, the tribunal on September 26, 2013 asked the top officials of Channel 24 and others to show cause why contempt proceedings should not be initiated for airing the ‘scandalous’ talk-show titled ‘Muktobaak’ on September 18 over the transparency of the 1971 war crimes trial.

Advocate M Asaduzzaman appeared for Channel 24 while Tajul Islam for Mahfuzullah. Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury defended his own case.

Zead Al Malum and Dr Tureen Afroz stood for the prosecution.
