Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has turned into the victim of government’s vengeance, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged Wednesday.
“The government is not pacified even after ravaging the livelihood of 84 lakh women dependent on the Grameen Bank, it launches a series of aggression on Prof Yunus aiming to humiliate him,” Mirza Fakhrul said in a statement.
Fakhrul made the reaction when the government’s move to take legal action against the pioneer of the micro-finance drew huge flak from different sections from both the local and international community.
The government on Monday decided to take legal action against Yunus and eight of his associated organisations for alleged irregularities in tax exemption.
“Internationally acclaimed Dr Yunus is being discredited by his own government. It seems that the government is trying to file cases against him in a hurry to demean him further,” the statement added.
When an accomplished citizen like Yunus is humiliated by the government to such a degree, the condition of the opposition and common people can easily be judged, the BNP leader argued.
Fakhrul also denounced the government’s move to take legal action against Yunus and urged it to stay away from its resolution.
The United States on Tuesday expressed concern over the recent news reports saying that the Bangladesh government may pursue a tax evasion lawsuit against Yunus.
It also urged the government to show fair treatment to the Nobel laureate, said a US State Department spokesperson.
