Yunus didn’t violate any law, claims Yunus Centre

It says he disclosed his all foreign incomes to NBR

Yunus Centre in a clarification on Monday night claimed that Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus did not violate any law as he has paid all the income taxes fixed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

In a statement, the Centre also claimed that Prof Yunus was not a public servant after 2000 as per the Supreme Court’s judgment as the court asked the NBR to take back the pays and perks he had been taking as Managing Director of Grameen Bank for 11 years since 2000.

“He showed his all local and foreign incomes always while submitting his income tax return. So, it’s the responsibility of those who fix taxes to define tax exempted incomes and taxable income. But the NBR never raised any question or issued notice or letter to him regarding this,” it said.

The Yunus Centre came up with the reaction to the government’s move against Professor Yunus for his alleged tax dodging on his foreign incomes.

On Monday, the cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, asked the NBR to take action against Dr Yunus as per its report (placed in the cabinet) for his alleged tax evasion on his foreign incomes.

The NBR in a recent report showed that Prof Yunus earned Tk 50,61,85,588 in between July 2004 and June 2011 in honorarium from 133 foreign organisations, awards from 10 organisations and royalty from 13 organisations.

The cabinet said he got income tax exemption worth Tk 12,65,46,397, but as the government servant he is not entitled to take so.

“Prof Yunus brought all his foreign incomes through the banking channel. He showed his all incomes during the income tax return and paid all the taxes whatever the NBR fixed,” the Yunus Centre claimed.

The NBR also did not say that Dr Yunus dodged the income taxes. Rather it said Prof Yunus appealed for income tax exemption and the NBR waived the taxes as per laws. “So, there was no violation of law.”

The NBR in its report raised question that being a public servant Dr Yunus did not take permission of the government for receiving any foreign income, awards and for oversees tours and thus violated the laws.

“Though the Supreme Court in its judgment termed Prof Yunus as a ‘public servant’, the court said he had been in office of the Managing Director of Grameen Bank for 11 years since 2000 in violation of the law and the court asked the NBR to take back the pays and perks he had taken for the 11 years.

Since he was not a public servant after 2000, the question of taking any government permission for receiving foreign incomes does not arise.

The laws which are applicable for a civilian are also equally applicable for him (Yunus). Therefore, the allegation the NBR has brought has no ground.”

  1. INDIA DEPLOYING ISRAELI DRONE ALONG BUNGLA BORDER AS A TOKEN OF SPECIAL FRIENDSHIP TO HASINA WHOM IT WANTS TO KEEP IN POWER.
After Mujib’s execution by Bangladeshi army in 1975 for TREASON veteran Indian socialist leader said, “ Congress under Indira Gandhi’s leadership while going to destroy one Pakistan actually created two. After the “DESTRUCTION OF JINNAH’S BELOVED PAKISTAN” euphoria ended this fact has sunk deep into Indian psyche and the belated realisation is there. The deployment of Israeli Drone along Bangla border and the now ritualistic & routine killing of unarmed Bangladeshis in the border is the symbol & reflection/reaction of that truth. Hasina’s father destroyed Pakistan to get in power. His daughter will destroy Bangladesh to stay in power, irrespective of the fact whether she is fit to be the head of government with required ability and experience. She cannot run a DEMOCRATIC government with a dozen ADVISERS who are not elected &accountable to none. Her departure is the demand of the time. Anti-Indian protest in front of Indian High Commission (Embassy) in Dhaka has infuriated India & its viceroy in Bangladesh Sri Sengupta.
