The Election Commission on Tuesday said that there is a possibility that the first phase of the upazila parishad elections will be held before Ramadan.

EC additional secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath made the announcement on the day at his Nirbachan Bhaban office, while talking with reporters.

The month of Ramadan is likely to begin in March.

Ashok Kumar said that there are 495 upazila parishads in the country.

Generally, elections are not held simultaneously in all upazilas as the commission holds the polls in a phase-by-phase manner.

The EC from the Local Government Division has so far received a list of 485 upazilas, whose councils will end their tenure by March.

‘As earlier the election was held in phases, this time also the election may be organised in the same manner. The Election Commission will decide the number of phases of the upazila elections,’ he said.

Ashok Kumar said that the first phase of the election can be held before the month of Ramadan and the remaining phases would be held after the Ramadan.

He said that the election should be held within 180 days before the expiry of the five year tenure. As such, all upazilas are eligible for election.

He said that the commission secretariat is ready for this election.

In response to another question, Ashok Kumar said that the EC has received the list of parliamentarians from the parliament secretariat.

The schedule for elections to the parliamentary seats reserved for women will be announced next week and the elections are likely to be held in February.
