UN may have things to say after Bangladesh general election: Dujarric

UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.

The United Nations has said that it obviously might have things to say after the Bangladesh general election slated for January 7, but their position remained unchanged so that people could vote freely without any sort of intimidation.

‘We do call for free and fair elections where people can vote freely without any sort of intimidation. Obviously, we may have things to say after the elections, but our position remains unchanged,’ the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told a routine briefing at the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday, while responding to a question.

In reply to another question, the spokesperson extended their condolences to all those who perished in a horrific fire in Dhaka.

‘I think it is incumbent on the authorities in Bangladesh to fully investigate the source and to bring those responsible to justice.’

Four people including a child were killed in an arson attack on train on December 19 in Dhaka.

The ruling Awami League and the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party are blaming each other for the arson attack.
