Customs and Rapid Action Battalion seized 1,600 kilograms of pearls and arrested a businessman at a house in Old Dhaka early Sunday for importing those by dodging taxes.
Acting on a tip-off, officials of customs and Rab-10 raided a five-storey building at Chakbazar and seized the pearls from two makeshift rooms on the roof, Md Tasnimur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Customs (Intelligence), told The Daily Star.
The estimated cost of the pearls is between Tk 12 crore and Tk 15 crore, the DC said.
The team seized the pearl when owner of the house Raja Miah, a businessman, failed to show any legal document in this regard, the customs official said.
Later, they arrested Raja at his house, said Md Quamrul Hassan, commanding officer of Rab-10.
The pearls have been kept in customs custody.
