There does not seem to be enough impetus from our government to take disciplinary action
There seems to be no end to the series of atrocities carried out by the Bangladesh Chhatra League. It is a shameful commentary that our government has been unable to rein in these thugs and put a stop to this violence, in spite of the fact that the BCL is the student wing of the ruling party.
The fact that two separate incidents of shocking brutality took place on the same day shows the extent to which BCL cadres feel immune to legal repercussions. After the twin incidents of 10 journalists being assaulted on the same day that a student from Jessore Science and Technology University was stabbed to death, instead of facing punishment, some cadres have even reportedly been promoted in the BCL ranks.
Time and again, BCL activists are getting away with assault and murder. There does not seem to be enough impetus from our government to take disciplinary action against them. Even when the central committee takes action and suspends its men, usually it is just for show.
We have editorialised before about the need for firm action to curb the lawless activities of the BCL. We are not content to have university authorities, party committees, and the government making false promises about taking action while the reality of the BCL crime rate remains unabated.
If the government allows the BCL to do whatever it wants with impunity, the student organisation will remain a serious stain on the credibility of the government, and a disgrace to the nation.
