BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman has come up with a fresh claim days after terming his father Ziaur Rahman the first president.
He has now claimed that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was an illegal prime minister of Bangladesh.
The claim was made at a programme in London, the video of which was floated in the internet.
The claim has been made days after a wave of discussions over BNP’s claim that Ziaur Rahman was the first president of Bangladesh.
Tarique apparently held the declaration of independence of the government formed on April 10, 1971 in his hand at the programme.
“It is clearly written that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman would remain the president with Syed Nazrul Islam the vice-president until a new constitution,” he quoted.
“How come Sheikh Mujib took the oath as prime minister after returning to Bangladesh on January 12? The constitution was yet to be prepared,” he said.
“The harsh truth, however unpleasant it may be, has to be brought to light for the sake of history,” he told the attendants at the programme.
“Like father, the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is holding on to power illegally,” he said.
Earlier, claims on Ziaur Rahman’s presidency drew flack from Awami League leaders.
