Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir has alleged BNP Senior Vice Chairperson Tarique Rahman breached his bond undertaking by participating in a political meeting in London recently.
“Tarique was able to go abroad on condition that he will not get involve in active politics,” Alamgir told reporters after inaugurating four police stations in Chittagong city on Thursday.
He also said the elder son of the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia would be brought back to the country to face trials and punishment on charges of flouting the bond and in other ongoing cases.
Tarique has 20 cases pending against him, among them a money laundering case, in which a Dhaka court has ordered his arrest, saying it will seek Interpol help to bring back the BNP leader from London to face trial. Tarique currently lives in London.
Tarique was arrested during the last caretaker regime. He took bail and went to London in 2008 with his family. He stayed on, ostensibly for medical reasons.
After lying low for a while, he was back in the headlines this May after campaigning for a caretaker administration for parliamentary polls during a function in East London on May 20. That was his first public appearance in almost five years.
He called upon expatriate Bangladeshis to mount pressure on the government on the issue and that attracted severe criticism from the Awami League.
”Tarique was allowed to go abroad on the bond condition though the then caretaker government had agreed that he was a criminal,” the minister said.
