The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has temporarily expelled four of its students, affiliated with Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), for their alleged involvement in Sunday’s attack on demonstrating teachers. SUST register Ishfaqul Hossain confirmed the expulsion news to to Prothom Alo on Tuesday. The expelled students are Ariful Islam Arif and Jahid Hossain Nayeem of Forests and Environment department, Dhani Ram Roy of Statistics, and Abdullah Al Masum of Political Studies. Meanwhile, the SUST demonstrating teachers have been observing a three-day work abstention programme from Tuesday protesting at Sunday’s attack on their colleagues allegedly by a group of activists of the ruling Awami League’s student wing BCL. The teachers brought out a rally wearing black badges on the campus. A group of SUST teachers have been demonstrating demanding resignation of the vice chancellor since 12 April under the banner of ‘Mohan Mukktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhakbrinda’. They accused the VC of showing discourtesy to some of their colleagues. Another faction of pro-government teachers started a counter protest in favour of the VC, under the banner of ‘Mohan Muktijuddher Chetona O Mukto Chintar Chorchaye Oikyaboddho Shikkhakbrinda’ Chhatra League men are demonstrating under the banner of general students against the agitating teachers. On 24 August, education ministry urged the agitating teachers to call off their movement and maintain their regular class routine. On Sunday, some BCL men assaulted the faction of teachers demonstrating against the VC. The enraged teachers went on a work abstention on Monday.
