Sugar price stable: Amu

Sugar prices in the country would remain stable with good global production of sugarcane keeping international prices even, the Industries Minister has said.

“Brazil and other major sugar producers have had good yields this year. There are no risks of sugar prices fluctuating,” Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said on Sunday.

He said that any effort to destabilise the internal sugar market would be rebuffed by the import coarse sugar to be refined at home sugar.

If destabilisation efforts persisted the government would impose additional duties on sugar import, Amu said.

The sugar prices have been stable for the last one year, the minister said.

According to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh, the current market prices swing within a narrow margin of Tk 42 to 44. A year ago, the prices ranged between Tk 48 and 50.

The minister was speaking at a seminar that discussed the role of accreditation in raising exports.

Speakers favoured an accredited laboratory in the country under public-private partnership.

They said it would reduce the pressure on laboratories run by the Bangladesh Standards Testing Association and save money and time in the testing of product quality.
