Kolkata Police Commissioner Ranjit Pachonanda confirmed the arrest to journalists Tuesday evening, reports the Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

Without giving details, he said a joint team of detectives and Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata police captured Subrata in Boubazar area of Kolkata.

A top official of Special Branch of Police in Bangladesh seeking anonymity confirmed the arrest to The Daily Star and two cases were filed against him — one for possessing an illegal firearm and another fore illegal immigration.

He said Bayen had fled from a Nepal jail on November 9 during prison unrest.

The official said the criminal was arrested in Nepal along with two Indian police officers who also trespassed on to Nepali territory chasing Bayen.

He said the government will consider bringing him back to Dhaka.

Bayen, apart from being wanted in several murder cases, was allegedly involved in the grenade attack on an Awami League rally in Dhaka in 2004 that killed 24 people and injured scores including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who was then the opposition leader.

Bayen’s name featured in the 23 top wanted men list of Bangladesh that was handed over to the Indian home department officials in 2008.

Bayen crossed over to India soon after Rapid Action Battalion launched a manhunt for the top most wanted criminals.
