Special bacteria, 13000 cleaners to clean Dhaka

This large number of cleaning staff will work round the clock for 48 hours. Apart from that, the two city corporations–North and South—will distribute special poly bags at cow haats and big residential complexes.

Every year during the festival of Eid-ul-Azha, waste from sacrificed animals are piled up along the neighbourhood alleys in Dhaka. Overpowering stench of rotten waste and clotted blood hangs in the Dhaka air for a prolonged period.

Every year DCC employs all its resources to keep Dhaka waste-free during the festive season.

Chief waste management officer of DCC (North) Capt Bipon Kumar Saha told bdnews24.com,”This year we will assign 7,500 staffs including our 2,700 own staffs to clean Dhaka on the Eid day. In addition to our own 170 vehicles, dump truck, prime mover, pay loader and long trailer will be used to clean up Dhaka city. We will hire 6 dump trucks and 1 prime mover.”

He also said they would use Savlon and bleaching powder to kill germs at waste disposal points.

In addition, DCC (North) has roped in Ava Development Society to use a special kind of microorganism to fight unbearable stench that sprang from piles of garbage.

Chief scientific officer of waste management department of Ava told bdnews24.com,” This special kind of microorganism will be sprayed on waste dumps. The spray has been developed in Thailand. We have introduced it here in Bangladesh with the aid of a Malaysian company.”

Elaborating how microorganism would work he said, “The spray consists of 4 bacteria. Within 4/5 seconds of spraying, the bacteria will kill others bacteria responsible for creating bad odour. Our two trucks will spray the bacteria using auto machine in various spots earmarked by DCC (North).”

“Our 26 staffs will do the spraying job at our own costs. We are distributing leaflets that contain our phone numbers. If city dwellers need our help, we’re just a call away.”

DCC north will broadcast and publish public awareness adds on 6 TV channels and 5 dailies.

Besides, it will also carry out campaigns through mikes and use Imams to make people aware about the need to keep their surroundings clean.

When asked what special measure(s) they would take this year, Capt Bipan said, “This year we are going to distribute a special kind of poly bag. A buyer will get the bag on clearing haat charges at cow haats.”

Chief waste management officer of DCC (South) Capt Raquib Uddin told bdnews24.com,” Apart from DCC’s (South) 5200 staffs, we will hire 12 more staffs in each ward to clear the waste. We will use 126 open trucks, 73 containers and 16 compactors. Moreover, we will get 1 pay loader and 1 water bowser from Army, 1 pay loader from Navy, 1 pay loader and 4 dump trucks from Toma group, 10 dump trucks and 1 pay loader from Orion group. We will also take the assistance of water carrying trucks of WASA and Fire brigade.”

Like DCC (North), DCC (South) has also planned to distribute 25000 special poly bags. Besides cow haats, the bags will be distributed in big residential quarters and apartment complexes.

DCC (South) would also carry out an awareness drive via SMS with the help of mobile operators, he added.
