Solution lies in govt’s ouster, says Khandaker Mahbub

BNP chairperson’s adviser Khandaker Mahbub Hossain on Monday said there is no alternative to ousting the current illegal government through a decisive movement to overcome the country’s ongoing political deadlock.

“The country is now facing only one problem — an illegal administration is on people’s shoulders. So, there’s also only one solution — this illegal regime must be unseated through a decisive movement,” he said.

Mahbub was addressing a discussion, titled ‘The impeachment law and the independence of the judiciary’ organised by pro-BNP platform Jatiyatabadi Prajanma 71 at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).

He said those who believe in the country’s independence must be united against this government to free the nation from its misrule forgetting who did what in 1971.

The senior legal expert also alleged that this illegitimate government is enchaining the country’s people by formulating various laws and policies one after another.

About the 16th amendment to the constitution, he said the amendment was brought to keep judges under pressure. “This regime has lost its balance, now people will have to get united to dislodge it.”

Mahbub said the BNP chairperson will call for a decisive movement at an appropriate time to ensure the fall of the government.

“Sheikh Hasina is now riding the tiger’s back and she can’t get off it. She’ll not go for an election unless her fall from it through a mass upsurge,” he added.

Addressing the programme, BNP international affairs secretary Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon said they want a fresh national election to be held as per the hopes and aspirations of people.

“The January-5 election was flawed and farcical one. No one accepted it. If a fresh election is not held immediately, the Prime Minister will get more authoritarian which will not be good for the country,” he said.
