Losing popularity, govt doesn’t dare to hold election under CG, she says
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday urged the government either to hold talks with the opposition or amend the constitution on its own initiative to restore the caretaker government system.
“Sit in dialogue with the opposition or reinstate the caretaker government system on your (government) own initiative. There’ll be no election in the country without the caretaker government…No election will be allowed to be held without the system,” she said.
Khaleda said this in her brief speech prior to an iftar party, arranged by Dhaka city unit BNP on the premises of Parliament Members Club, LD Bhaban.
Entering the venue around 6:41pm, the BNP chief exchanged pleasantries with the guests.
Khaleda observed that the people of the country want to get rid of the current regime as they have got fed up with its misrule and failures.
“We’ll bring changes in the country by ousting the government. We’ll establish good governance, the rule of law, will create jobs and free the nation from corruption,” she added.
Mentioning that her party believes in peace, democracy and democratic movement, Khaleda said, “You (Awami League) had waged so many movements and damaged public property… We had accepted your demand for restoring the caretaker government system to avert further damages to public property.”
She went on: “The present government has got alienated from people… so they’re now afraid of arranging the election under a non-party caretaker government system.”
“If you (govt) think you have the popularity and carried out development activities, then take part in the election with courage under a non-party caretaker government,” Khaleda said.
Khaleda, also the former premier, alleged that the government did nothing in its five-year tenure. “Instead, it has branded Bangladesh as a corrupt nation on the global stage through its unbridled corruption.”
A munajat was offered before the iftar seeking divine blessings for peace and progress of the country and the welfare of its people.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Dr RA Gani, MK Anwar, Jamiruddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan Dhaka city unit BNP convener Sadeque Hossain Khoka and member secretary Abdus Salam joined the iftar party.
Top leaders of the BNP-led 18-party alliance also took part in the iftar.
