Next polls as per constitution, she reiterates
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday alleged that her arch rival BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had been in Singapore twice to save her son’s laundered money, but failed.
“When we come to power we work for people and think about their welfare but when BNP assumes office they resort to corruption, looting and terrorism and siphon off public money abroad,” she told a public rally at C&B ground.
“You (people) surely didn’t forget that the BNP chief (Khaleda) went to Saudi Arabia with suitcases when she was in power. And this time when we’ve have been on a drive to bring her son’s siphoned-off money from Singapore, she rushed there twice to protect it. But the Singapore court didn’t give in it and the Singapore government returned it to Bangladesh,” the premier said.
Local unit of the ruling party arranged the rally.
Hasina, also the President of the ruling Awami League, criticised the BNP for calling the handover of a ‘symbolic cheque’ of Arafat Rahman Koko’s laundered money a drama, and said they are saying this to confuse people.
“Who plays drama.. we handed over people’s money to people. Don’t confuse people. We’ have brought back the laundered money of her one son. An FBI member also testified against her another son in a money-laundering case. How did you call it drama when forefingers have made depositions?” she told her audience.
On Tuesday, attorney general M Mabubey Alam at a programme at a city hotel handed over a ‘symbolic cheque’ of the Oversees Bank of Singapore worth US$ 956,387.4 (Tk 740.24,35 crore) allegedly siphoned off by Khaleda’s younger son Arafat Rahman Koko to ACC chairman M Badiuzzaman.
The opposition BNP on Wednesday termed drama the handover of a ‘symbolic cheque’ of laundered money reportedly by Arafat Rahman Koko to the Anti Corruption Commission, and said it is an act to undermine BNP and its chairperson.
Claiming that all the polls held under her government were free and fair, Sheikh Hasina iterated that the next parliament election will be held as per the Constitution and people will freely exercise their franchise.
Listing her government’s various development activities and successes, the Awami League chief called upon people to vote for her party for maintaining peace in the country and the pace of development.
“I call upon you, if you want peace, country’s development and want to stamp out terrorism and militancy, please rally round Awami League. Cast your votes for our candidates in the upcoming election and give us another chance serve you.
