According to a probe report on the attack on setting fire to Santal houses in Gaibandha’s Gobindaganj upazila on November 6 last year, which was submitted to the High Court (HC) on Thursday, two police personnel– a sub-inspector (SI) and constable — were involved in setting fire to the houses of the Santals.
A three-member probe committee led by the additional deputy inspector general of police (Rangpur range) submitted the report on Thursday through Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Saju as per an earlier order of the HC.
The HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath kept the police report in its record.
The accused law enforcers have been identified as SI (Detective Branch) Mahbubur Rahman and Constable Sazzad Hossain of Gobindaganj Police Station, the probe report said.
The DAG informed the HC that Mahbubur and Sazzad have already been suspended for their act.
On November 6 last year, at least two people of the ethnic community died and 25 people were injured in a clash between indigenous people and labourers as well as police at Shahebganj sugarcane farm of Rangpur Sugar Mills in Gobindaganj upazila over land dispute.
Later, after videos appeared of law enforcers setting fire to Santal settlements, the High Court ordered a probe into the matter. The probe found three policemen and locals guilty of the act.
