Mahir Sarowar Megh was at Dhaka’s Drik Gallery on Monday, flaunting a book his father had authored.
“This book written by my father costs Tk 150. You can have one in black and white if you want,” he says to bdnews24.com.
He even autographs the book once it was bought.
Two years ago on this day, 6-year-old Megh called his grandmother on the phone to tell her that both his parents had been killed.
In 2012, Maasranga Television News Editor Sagar Sarowar and ATN Bangla Senior Reporter Meherun Runi were stabbed to death in their bedroom.
And the mystery over the murders continues to deepen.
The latest investigating agency, RAB, claims it is working at full blast, but the force’s chief Mokhlesur Rahman goes silent when asked about the progress. It’s a ‘matter that’s being investigated’, is all he has to say.
Even the journalists’ organisations have run out of steam over the issue after two years.
Runi’s brother, Nowsher Alam Roman, however, has hopes that justice will be served. He is the plaintiff of the case filed over the murders.
“I believe there’s still time to trace the killers. If the ones involved in the investigation act a little more responsibly, I hope the murderers will be found,” he said while speaking to this correspondent.
Megh was accompanied by his uncle Roman at the gallery on Monday, where the family organised a photography exhibition in memory of the journalist couple.
The 6-year-old, holding a copy of his father’s book, was staring the whole time at his parent’s pictures.
“I go to school every day,” said Megh, who is living now with his mother’s family.
On the night of the macabre murder, the little boy had to see his parents lying dead in a pool of blood.
Erstwhile Home Minister Shahara Khatun, while visiting residence of the slain journalists, had thundered that the killers would be identified and arrested within 48 hours.
On Feb 13, 2012, the Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmood Khandker claimed ‘remarkable’ progress in the probe, promising the nation ‘good’ news soon.
Three days later, Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s spokesperson Monirul Islam had said suspects included people of different professional backgrounds were under watch.
But police got nowhere and finally admitted failure. The High Court put the RAB on the job.
In Oct 2013, the home ministry claimed credit for cracking the case, producing a list of eight killers it said had been identified.
Neither journalists nor the families of the victims found the version credible as five of them were accused in the murder of Dr Nitai Chandra Dey, a leader of a doctors’ professional body.
One Tanvir Rahman, who was claimed to be a friend of Runi, was among the eight arrested. But, Runi’s brother Roman immediately dismissed Tanvir being a family friend.
The arrested eight also include the watchman of the building where the journalist couple lived.
The RAB does not keep the victim’s families in the loop about the investigation, according to Roman.
After taking charges, RAB had sent DNA samples of 16 suspects to the US along with a knife and samples of clothes as crime-scene evidence.
The RAB has so far questioned 127 persons on the matter, but the report is yet to be completed, RAB chief Mokhlesur Rahman told the media.
“The RAB is investigating with utmost professionalism. The matter is still being investigated, so nothing further can be revealed,” he commented.
