Robi receives 3G license

Private mobile phone operator Robi Axiata Limited officially received 3G license from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Thursday.

Executive Vice President of Robi Mahmudur Rahman officially received the license from BTRC Chairman Sunil Kanti Bose.

Robi bought 5 MHz spectrum for 3G at an auction here on Sunday last.

The operator has already paid the BTRC 100 percent of the acquisition fees and 60 percent of spectrum fees. So far, Robi has paid $67.5 million (BDT 524.8 crore) for license. The second installment of $44.1 million will be paid within 6 months, sources at Robi said.

“We’re very pleased to receive the license as it enables us to embark upon the much-awaited mobile data revolution,” said Robi CEO and Managing Director Michael Kuehner.

He further said Robi is eagerly waiting to participate in expanding the country’s data services aimed at improving the lives of people.
