RMG safety: Netherlands assures continued support

Netherlands Ambassador in Dhaka Gerben Sjoerd de Jong on Sunday assured Bangladesh of its continued cooperation in improving the working environment, including fire safety, in the readymade garment (RMG) industry.

 

The assurance came at a meeting with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at her Parliament office where they discussed various issues of bilateral interest.

 

The envoy said the importance of RMG sector in Bangladesh’s development is enormous and laid importance on the improvement on the safety and working environment issues.

 

He also said the Netherlands has been assisting Bangladesh in the areas of water management, food security, women’s empowerment and development. “This assistance will continue in the future, too.”

 

Speaker Shirin Sharmin said Bangladesh has achieved a remarkable progress in the areas of women’s empowerment and gender equity. “Bangladesh has also progressed much in achieving MDGs.”

 

She said the RMG sector has very strong role in empowering women and establishing workers rights. “The government has taken steps for the development of the sector, especially to bring the buyers into confidence.”

 

The Speaker also mentioned that the government has formulated labour law as per the ILO Convention.
