Rizvi gets bail in explosives case

The High Court on Monday granted bail to BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in an explosive case filed at the Paltan Police Station.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Borhan Uddin and Justice KM Quamrul Kader granted the bail till the case is disposed.

Advocate Zainul Abdin argued for Rizvi at the hearing while Advocate Sagir Hossain Leon assisted him. Additional Attorney General Momtaz Uddin Fakir stood for the state.

Advocate Sagir Hossain Leon told bdnews24.com that since the BNP leader already secured bail in all other cases filed against him, there was no legal bar to release him from jail custody following the High Court order.

During a raid at the BNP’s Naya Paltan central office on Mar 11, police arrested over 150 of its leaders and workers, including some members of the BNP top brass.

The law enforcers had launched the drive in the BNP office, after some 10 crude bombs went off near the party’s central office, while BNP Acting Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was addressing a rally.

Police filed two cases under the Speedy Trial Act and Explosives Act at the Paltan Police Station the next day.

Though a High Court bench on Apr 17 had granted bail to Rizvi in the case filed under the Speedy Trial Act, the two judges gave different orders in the explosive case.

A single bench had rejected the BNP leader’s bail petition.

But the High Court bench of Justice Borhan Uddin and Justice KM Quamrul Kader granted Rizvi’s bail after a hearing over the ruling the court had earlier issued on his bail appeal.
