Return to caretaker: BNP

The BNP has again demanded that the general elections be held under a non-party neutral caretaker government.

“Please stop being arrogant and stubborn, accept the people’s demand of a non-party caretaker government and add the provision to the Constitution,” party’s spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Tuesday addressing the Prime Minister.

He referred to the opposition-backed candidates’ sweeping the five civic polls to maintain that the people had indeed backed their demand.

Fakhrul also rejected Sheikh Hasina’s statement over the nature of polls-time government.

During a meeting with several British MPs in London on Monday, Hasina had said the national election in Bangladesh would be held much the same way it is done in the UK.

Reacting to the statement, Fakhrul said the people would not accept elections held under party-led administrations.

He said the parliamentary polls must be held under a non-partisan government. “The people will not accept the elections if held otherwise,” the BNP leader said at a discussion in Dhaka.

“There’s still time, please try to understand what the people want,” the BNP acting Secretary General urged the Prime Minister.
