Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury on Monday urged the Prime Minister to reinstate the caretaker government system to save the country and its democracy.
“I call upon the Prime Minister to reinstate the caretaker government system in the constitution to save the country and democracy. Or else, the Prime Minister will be held responsible if any unconstitutional administration comes to power,” he said.
B Chowdhury, also a former president, made the call while addressing an iftar party at a community centre in Mirpur arranged by BDB Dhaka city north unit.
The BDB chief criticised the Prime Minister for her remarks that caretaker government is unconstitutional as there is no provision for such a system in the current constitution. “The way the Prime Minister speaks is not the langue of democracy.”
The veteran politician said the caretaker government system can be made constitutional by only an amendment to the constitution.
He claimed that the same situation is prevailing in the country for which the caretaker system was introduced in 1996.
B Chowdhury also suggested the Prime Minister to take lessons from the consequences of BNP’s February 15, 19196 elections and Ershad’s 1986 lopsided polls.
