Rahul Gandhi will not be the prime ministerial candidate for the Congress in the upcoming elections in India, local media NDTV reported on Thursday.

The decision came from incumbent Congress chief and Rahul Gandhi’s mother Sonia Gandhi. But Rahul will lead the Congress campaign in the coming months.

The decision was made in a meeting of the Congress’s working committee, the party’s senior-most leaders, on Thursday evening.

However, the name of the likely prime ministerial candidate from Congress in opposition to Narendra Modi of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was not disclosed in the report.

Rahul Gandhi said he was a dedicated soldier of the Congress, a leader Janardhan Dwivedi said. He said he will perform his duties as asked by the party.

The constitutional term of the current Congress government rule in India will expire on May 31 this year.
