President mentions constitutional limitation as opposition seeks his help

As the 18-party alliance sought his initiative to break the current political standoff, President Abdul Hamid on Tuesday told the opposition alliance leaders that no government in the past incorporated any provision in the Constitution over the role of the President in extending his help to overcome any critical situation.

“No government in the past incorporated any provision in the Constitution over the role of President during the critical time,” President’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim quoted the President as saying in a meeting with a 20-member delegation of the alliance at Bangabhaban in the evening.

The President’s Press Secretary briefed reporters after the crucial meeting between the President and a 20-member delegation of the 18-party led by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia from 6:28pm to 7:26pm.

The President told the 18-party leaders that both political parties — Awami League and BNP — will have to come forward for initiating the dialogue.

“The solution will come, if the negotiation is held. The dialogue will be better for the nation. But both sides will have to take initiatives for the dialogue,” Ihsanul Karim quoted the President as saying.

The 18-party alliance leaders, led by Khaleda Zia, apprised the President about the country’s current political situation and urged him to take an initiative for resolving the political crisis.

Ihsanul Karim said the opposition leaders informed the President that the 18-party alliance will not accept any lopsided election and alleged that their repeated requests to the government for holding dialogue went unheeded.

“I have to protect and preserve the Constitution…the democratic process will have to be continued,” Ihsanul Karim quoted the President as saying further.

The President assured the 18-party leaders of conveying their message to the government for resolving the ongoing political crisis, Ihsanul Karim said.
