Bishwajit killer Shakil remanded

Rafiqul Islam Shakil is seen with a machete by which he hacked Bishwajit Das in Old Dhaka during December 9 countrywide road blockade.

A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Rafiqul Islam Shakil, the key accused of Bishwajit Das killing case, on an eight-day remand.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfan Ullah passed the order after Tajul Islam, an inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Police, produced Shakil before it seeking a 10-day remand.

In the forwarding report, Tajul Islam, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, said Shakil is the prime accused in the case.

They identified Shakil from photos and video footages of the murder scene where Shakil hacked Bishwajit with a machete on December 9 in Sutrapur of Old Dhaka.

So, the accused need to be remanded to find out vital clues about the killing and the whereabouts of their other accomplices responsible for committing such offence, the IO said.

Twenty-four-year-old Bishwajit was beaten and hacked to death by activists of pro-Awami League student body Chhatra League during December 9 countrywide road blockade enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance.

The detectives arrested Shakil, a second-year student of Islamic history at Jagannath University, at a relative’s house in Barguna through tracking his mobile calls early Saturday.

DB also recovered the machete from a shop on the JnU campus Saturday night.

So far 10 people were arrested in connection with Bishwajit murder.

Earlier on Saturday, a Dhaka court placed Saiful Islam and Rasheduzzaman Shaon, the two accused in the case who were arrested on Friday, on an eight-day remand each in connection with the murder case.

A Dhaka court on Friday placed three of the seven people held earlier on an eight-day remand each.
