The main opposition BNP thinks that scrapping the election office’s authority to cancel the candidature in parliamentary polls for violation of electoral laws will give rise to such crimes.
The crime will go up at such a rate which the Election Commission may not be able to control, the party said Wednesday criticising the move.
Many experts expressed surprise at the EC proposal decision not to retain its sweeping authority to cancel one’s candidature in parliamentary polls for violation of electoral laws.
“This provision is necessary otherwise such offences will rise which the commission won’t be able to tackle,” BNP standing committee member MK Anwar said at a press conference at the party headquarters at Nayapaltan Wednesday.
In line with the decision to amend the Representation of People Order (RPO) by abolishing article 91(E), the EC asked its secretariat to send a proposal to the law ministry for amending the RPO.
Nothing can be done if the ballot boxes are looted after the provision is scrapped, Anwar told reporters.
People have lost all hopes by such activities of the EC, he said.
Urging the EC to come back to the straight path and hold talks with people and political parties, Anwar added, “A severe crisis prevails in politics. The EC thinks that it will be able to hide the crisis by such unlawful acts. If you try to salvage a certain party which has already drowned into the deep waters, your own existence will be in jeopardy.”
