Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday greeted the mayors-elect of five city corporations.
She thanked the Election Commission, political parties, administration, law enforcement agencies and the media for their role in holding the election in a free and fair manner.
In a statement, Hasina, who also heads the ruling Awami League, said the democracy and the people had won the city corporation elections.
“It has now been proved that the Elections Commission, administration and law enforcers can act neutrally under a political government,” Hasina said a day after her return from London and Belgium tour.
Main opposition BNP-backed candidate MA Manna won the Gazipur City Corporation polls by beating AL supported candidate Ajmat Ullah Khan by a wide margin on July 7.
Earlier on June 15, the opposition favourites won the elections in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet city corporations.
