The ballistic report suggests that the shot was fired from Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan’s son Bakhtiar Alam Rony’s firearm that claims the lives of two people, police said.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam made the disclosure in a press conference at DMP media centre on Friday afternoon.
Replying to a query from journalists, Monirul said: “We received the report yesterday. Now, we are confirmed that the bullet was fired from Roni’s gun.”
In response to another query how they will prove that Roni fired the shot, he said: “We have enough evidence to prove that the deaths were caused by Roni.”
He said Roni’s friends Tiger Kamal and Md Jahangir Hossain, who were on the Prado jeep during the incident, also told a Dhaka court that Rony had fired the shots.
On April 13, Yakub Sikder, driver of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw of the daily Janakantha, and Abdul Halim, a rickshaw-puller, received bullet injuries when Rony fired at people indiscriminately in Dilu Road on that night.
Halim died on April 15 while Yakub succumbed to his injuries on April 23 while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Halim’s mother Monowara Begum filed the case with Ramna police station on April 15. It was then shifted to the Detective Branch of police on May 24.
Detectives arrested Rony from his Elephant Road residence on May 31. On June 1, a Dhaka court granted the DB police four days to interrogate Rony. After he pretended to be sick, interrogation finally began on June 9.
