Police dispersed protesters seeking cancellation of medical admission tests for question paper leak out and retake of the tests charging baton at Kawarn Bazar as they were heading towards health directorate to submit a memorandum.
Breaking police barricade in front of central public library, the protesters blocked Shahbagh intersection to press home their demands amid a student strike underway at educational intuitions.
They continued blocking Shahbagh intersection around 2:00pm and then tried to march towards the health directorate at Mohakhali. Police could obstruct a portion of the protesters and others managed to proceed to Karwan Bazar.
Besides, a day-long student strike is underway at all educational institutions across the country in support of the protesters.
At Dhaka University, Progressive Student’s Alliance locked up all the faculties since morning while no classes and examination took place. The alliance also brought out protest rallies at different points of the campus supporting the strike.
At Jahangirnagar University Left-leaning student bodies also observed a day-long strike in the campus to press home their four -point demand including retake of medical admission tests.
They brought out a protest rally and locked the main entrance of New Arts and Humanities Faculty this morning.
Other public universities and medical colleges of the country also remained closed due to the strike.
The results of MBBS and BDS admissions tests, with a success rate of 58.4 per cent, were published on September 20. The protesting students alleged that the questions papers were made available to a large number of students on September 17, a day before the exams.
Meanwhile, law enforcing agencies arrested several propagators including physicians of Rangpur Medical College Hospital and University Grants Commission official Omar Siraj on charge of leaking questions of MBBS admission tests. The suspended UGC assistant director Omar Siraj died in Rapid action Battalion custody on Thursday evening, while the family blamed custodial torture for the death.
