Police have brought sedition charges against Nagorik Oikya chief Mahmudur Rahman Manna and BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
A leaked phone conversation between the two had revealed plans to destabilise the government by engineering clashes at the Dhaka University.
Police’s Assistant Commissioner (Gulshan zone) Nurul Alam told bdnews24.com that they had received a written government permission signed on Mar 4 needed for sedition cases.
Gulshan police Sub-Inspector Sheikh Sohel filed the case on Thursday evening.
Manna had been pushing for a dialogue between the Awami League and BNP to end the current political impasse.
The leaked conversation had revealed the former Awami League leader’s true motive behind his call for a dialogue.
He was trying to make Nagorik Oikya the ‘third most important party’ in Bangladesh.
In another conversation with an unidentified person, Manna said he was keen to play a role in a military takeover in Bangladesh.
Police are currently questioning him in a case filed for inciting the army.
BNP leader Khoka has been staying in the US for eight months now.
Gulshan Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com, “They (Manna and Khoka) have been charged with plotting acts of sabotage and killing at Dhaka University to oust the government.”
