Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina criticised the BNP leaders yesterday for their “special interest” in Narendra Modi-led BJP’s landslide victory.

She made the remarks at an informal discussion between the prime minister and the panel of ministers after the cabinet’s regular meeting at the Secretariat.

“The premier wanted to know the reason for their happiness from the cabinet members. She said the BNP has never found anything good in India, terming the Awami League its agent. Finally, they have found something good in the country,” a senior minister told the Dhaka Tribune after the meeting.

The minister quoted Hasina as saying: “Has the party changed its anti-Indian stance in politics? It is better to know that they have finally changed their stance. Not only the Awami League, but also the BNP has become an agent of India.”

He said: “The premier said the BNP should know that there is nothing to be so happy about in Modi’s win. We have a good relationship with the country, not with any political party. She said the relationship will continue in the future.”

The prime minister and the cabinet members also criticised the discussants of talk shows on several electronic media for their comments, regarding the relationship between India and the Awami League, made after BJP’s win.

  1. In fact the way both Hasina and Khaleda went head over heel to pay homage to Modi, revealed nothing but their own master-servant slavish mentality vis-a-vis India.

This is certainly not how most Bangladeshis feel, most could not be bothered and given Modi’s anti-Muslim record many are disturbed. What is, however, sad here is that the sycophantic behaviour of these two leaders seemed to have profiled Bangladesh as a subject paying tribute to the emperor – this is disgusting!

  2. I agree. There is nothing to feel sad about or to rejoice. It will be business as usual on the part of the Indians. Hasina took the lead by sending that long congratulatory note. Khaleda felt that she should not be left behind in the race! One more point: let us not be swayed what Hasina says, she does not usually know what she is talking about or from where she is talking!!

  3. Bangladesh is a strategic neighbor of India. As such it is just a matter of courtsey for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Mrs. Khaleda Zia to send congratulatory note and speak to newly elected Prime Minister of India, Mr. Modi. We Bangladeshis (many of us) dig out negetivity in everything. Lets us be positive.

  4. Being courteous as a neighbor is one thing, being subservient beyond the norms of protocol is another thing. Both Hasina and Khaleda appear to be racing for the first place in giving Modi a better impression of their support. That is the problem. For Hasina it is business as usual. Hasina flew to Kolkata with an entourage to attend Jyoti Basu’s funeral, whereas, India’s Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, did not attend Mr. Basu’s funeral. I am just referring to the protocol, and nothing else.
