People to foil PM’s plots: Mahbub

Calling for restoration of the caretaker government provision for overseeing the next parliamentary polls, vice-chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain on Tuesday warned that there will be a mass upsurge in the country if the demand is not met.

“The Prime Minister is going to hold the next parliamentary polls under her party’s banner. If the next polls are held under a party banner, the country’s masses will explode,” he told a press conference at Jatiya Press Club in the capital.

“She (PM) knows people of Bangladesh can become harsher,” Mahbub said. “They will foil all her plots.”

Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) jointly organised the press conference.

Mahbub, also an adviser to Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia, noted the Prime Minister had earlier said that she never changed her decision on the caretaker government issue, and always stuck by the country’s Constitution.

“I want to say she never follows the Constitution. She will deceive, and mislead people giving false commitment to them.”

About the resignation of the ministers, he said the post of the ministers have become vacant immediately after the submission of resignation letters to the Prime Minister.

BFUJ president Ruhul Amin Gazi in a written statement said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasaina is behaving ambiguously.

“She (Hasina) says she does not want the premiership, she wants peace. On the other hand, she is spreading mayhem on the streets, including killing people,” he said.

Gazi also contrasted Skeikh Hasina urging the opposition to join dialogue, with opposition leaders being detained. “The Ministers also threaten the opposition leader that she too will be detained. It is not a democratic attitude,” he added.

Former pro-vice chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Yusuf Haider and Jatiya Press Club president Kamal Uddin Sabuj also spoke at the press conference.
